1. What are the benefit of MBTs?
MBT helps solve knee and back problems, relieve tension in the neck, ease joint pains – and more or less pass help to tone and shape firm buttocks and thighs. MBT burns more calories when standing and slow running compared to ordinary shoes.
2. Can MBTs help me to lose weight?
Wearing MBTs activates the stretch reflex, thereby helping tone the postural muscles, increasing circulation. Wearing MBTs during aerobic exercise will help you burn more calories, thus helping you to lose weight.
3. Does MBT really work like magic as advertised?
Yes, it does. MBT is now even prescribed by doctors and recommended by fitness experts. And to some extent, it is not magic, it is real and based on scientific principle——the principle of "natural instability". An effect which can, in fact, be achieved without the benefit of high-tech footwear: by simply walking barefoot on soft, uneven, natural ground such as sand or moss. However, in today's thoroughly modern world this is not always easy to do - but the health benefits are significant. While wearing MBTs the body is forced to maintain its natural balance, thereby stimulating and exercising the body's supporting muscle system which results in numerous pro-body benefits.
4. Why walking barefoot on soft, uneven, natural ground is better to health than on hard, flat surfaces?
Walking barefoot on soft, uneven, natural ground creates a natural instability, to which the body responds with small, intuitive, compensatory movements. The midsole, with its integrated balancing area, requires an active and controlled rolling movement with every step. The body's entire musculoskeletal system is activated and exercised, the muscles in the buttocks, stomach and back are strengthened, posture and gait are kept relaxed and upright and stress on the joints and back is relieved. Not only does the anti-shoe increase the fitness levels of its wearer with every step, it also has sustainable health benefits.
5. Is there research supporting how MBTs work?
Yes, there are 10 years of intensive study and research on MBT. Research guides our product development and provides proof of the benefits of wearing MBTs. We’ve done research to direct the evolution and quantify the effectiveness of MBTs, and the scientifically proven physiological benefits are impressive and desirable to anybody ready for a more healthful and energetic life.
6. What does it mean if I feel numbness, pins and needles, or heat in my feet?
Because the MBT technology makes the foot muscles more active than in conventional flat shoes, the muscles in the feet begin to work harder in rolling through the foot with each stride. This can lead to conditions of improved circulation and activation of the muscles in the calf and around the shin, which are mostly passive in normal walking. Sensations such as pins and needles, sweaty feet and numbness can initially occur and will subside after wearing MBTs for a period of time.
7. What ages can wear MBTs?
The suitability of MBT is not based on age but on fit and ability to walk properly and comfortably in the MBTs. As long as there is a good fit and there is adequate strength around the foot and ankle to walk with a good gait pattern, MBTs are appropriate. In general, there is no upper age limit but children younger than ten may have difficulty with the current range of MBTs. If in doubt, consult with MBT Academy.
8. Can I drive in my MBTs?
Yes you can. Please ensure you are comfortable and confident in your MBTs beforehand.
9. Can I just put them in the washing machine?
No. Due to the complex nature of the technology in the Masai Sensor, MBTs will disintegrate if put in the washing machine, and they cannot be repaired.
10. Can I wear MBTs every day?
The more you wear your MBTs, the more your body will feel the benefits. Try to wear your MBTs as regularly and as often as possible.
11. Why MBT is called anti-shoe?
Anti-shoe means the antithesis of a shoe. And the reason is that MBT is totally different from shoe: its sole is curved, not flat; It is unstable, not stable; It activates your muscles instead of undermining them; It has a positive effect on the entire body, not just the feet.
12. How long should I wear my MBTs each day?
MBT usage should initially be between 1 -2 hours per day for the first week. Gradually building up by 30 minutes per week, until the MBT shoes can be comfortably worn for extended periods, by which time muscle activation and proprioceptive feedback are sufficiently attuned to wear the MBT shoes all day, every day.
13. Why do I get burning in my feet after wearing them?
The burning sensation experienced by certain individuals is due to increased blood flow to the intrinsic foot musculature. This should settle after a few weeks. In certain individuals it may persist for longer and can actually be an indication of vascular impairment, possibly due to conditions such as arteriosclerosis or diabetes. If the burning sensation persists the individual is advised to contact their family physician who will be able to organise baseline investigations.
14. Why do my leg muscles ache after wearing my MBT shoes?
The aching sensation experienced by individuals especially in the first few days of wearing MBT shoes is a well recognised phenomenon in any individual undertaking a new exercise programme. It is known as delayed onset muscle soreness and normally settles after the first 5 days of wear.
15. Why do I get backache after wearing MBT shoes?
This is due to the increase activation of the lumbo-sacral musculature and is also in part due to the alteration of trunk angle relative to the pelvis when wearing MBT shoes. An individual walking in MBT shoes automatically attains a more upright posture rather than a forward leaning gait. This is due to the patented negative heel technology.
16. I have diabetes, can I wear MBT shoes?
MBT shoes can be worn by individuals with both insulin dependent and non-insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus. Wearing MBT shoes stimulates blood flow to all muscle groups in the legs. It is also a potent aid to proprioceptive thereby stimulating the nerve supply to muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons in the lower limbs. This is of benefit and may help individuals who are prone to develop the nero-vascular complications of Diabetes Mellitus.
17. I have had a stroke, can I wear MBT shoes?
The aims of treatment after the acute phase of a stroke are to minimise impairments, disability and secondary complications with minimal adverse effects from treatment. To this end MBT shoes may be beneficial. As previously mentioned, MBTs are a potent activator of vascular flow in the lower limb. When used in conjunction with certain specific exercises such as those in the DST programme muscle activation significantly improves in the gluteals, hamstrings and calf musculature. MBT footwear also give active proprioceptive feedback with every step taken. It should always be remembered, however, that MBT is fundamentally an unstable footwear devise. Certainly with prolonged, supervised usage they should aid rehabilitation, but initially there may be an increased risk of falls if used in an unsupervised setting by an inexperienced individual.
18. I have just had a heart attack, is it OK for me to wear MBT shoes?
Cardiac rehabilitation improves coronary risk factors and reduces the risks of major cardiac events in people after heart attack. MBT may therefore be used as part of a cardiac rehabilitation programme together with suitable education, medication and lifestyle modification.
19. I have arthritis in the big toe, will MBT shoes help me?
MBT footwear dynamically alters loading through the foot, ensuring that the load is distributed evenly through the foot from the moment of heel strike until the foot leaves the ground at toe off. This mimics walking barefoot. Conventional shoes concentrate on loading through the heel and then through the forefoot thereby accentuating loading through the joint of the big toe. Therefore patients who have arthritis in the big toe should benefit from wearing MBTs.
20. I have a difference in leg length and have to wear a heel raise. Can I put this in the MBT shoes?
Yes. Heel raises for true leg length discrepancy (most commonly caused by congenital abnormality or following a fracture to either the femur or tibia), may be worn with MBT shoes. However if the leg length abnormality is caused by muscle shortening or joint dysfunction due to tendon or ligament dysfunction, the individual should consult a muscular-skeletal specialist as the problem may be amenable to remedial treatment and heel raises may in fact not be required.
21. I have poor blood supply to my legs, will MBT shoes help this?
Depending on the severity of the altered or abnormal vascular supply MBT shoes may be an aid to improving peripheral circulation in the affected limb. It is important to realise, however, that as MBT may increase muscle activation initially the compromised circulation in the affected limb may actually lead to an increase in pain. This is due to inadequate blood supply.
